Nitrogen is a completely inert substance. This means that it will not react to the tires even if they happen to get very hot.Tires that are filled with nitrogen will last much longer, and they will be able to sustain the stresses of racing much better. Also, if the tire happens to catch fire, it will not be fueled by the massive amounts of oxygen that are stored in compressed air.
Another advantage of nitrogen filled tires is that the nitrogen is heavier than air, which helps to place weight at the lowest point of the car, which can improve handling. There is also less of a risk of the oxygen forming into water inside of the tire, which can imbalance the tires.
